Information on Waterloo Region

The Region encompasses the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge, as well as the Townships of North Dumfries, Woolwich, Wellesley and Woolwich.

We continue to grow with a population increase averaging around 1.67% per year. We currently have a population around 535,000; the Region's official plan has a our growth reaching 729,000 by 2029.

We are proud of our two universities - University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, and our Conestoga College.

Our economy is extremely diversified, which has allowed our Region to continue to adapt during the current economic uncertainty. We are part of Canada's Technology Triangle, with well known high tech companies such as Research in Motion, Waterloo Maple Software, ATS, Open Text, and Com Dev.

We are also known for the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics; CIGI (Centre for International Governance Innovation ), the Institute for Quantum Computing.

A few interesting facts you may not know about local businesses:

- Christie is the world leader in digital motion projection systems
- Com Dev is the largest designer and manufacturer of space systems - 80% of all commercial communications satellites have parts manufactured by Com Dev
- Open Text was the source of Yahoo's first search engine; today's it is the world's largest independent supplier of enterprise content management

Did you know that Google has an office in Kitchener, which is a leading engineering center for research and development of Internet technology?

We're not all high tech however. We have Toyota plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, which employ about 6,000 people. The Canadian head offices for the Economical Mutual Insurance Company and Equitable Life Insurance Company are both in town. If you like cookies, did you know that both Colonial Cookies and Dare manufacture their delectables in plants in Kitchener?

And don't forget our farmers! Our farmer's markets are famous for local fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and baked goods. We are proud of the work they do.

Don't hesitate to call me to ask about what's going on in our Region.
I'd be happy to talk to you about it!
